Thu Thu Zin was part of a small pro-democratic, anti-coup protest movement in Mandalay. The group would often march in crowded areas in suburbs or markets in Mandalay. Myanmar Witness found no evidence to suggest that Thu Thu Zin was involved in violent protest activity, or that she was armed. Myanmar Witness has confirmed that Thu Thu Zin was shot and killed while partaking in a protest.

This is yet another example of fatal attacks on peaceful protesters by the military since the February 2021 coup. Myanmar Witness has documented violence against women in Myanmar and through reports demonstrates the violence used against civilians exercising their right to freedom of assembly and association. Media reporting indicates that Thu Thu Zin’s body was taken by the military after the event, but was not returned to her family. A small funeral service was held for Thu Thu Zin in the days following her death, using her personal belongings in place of a body.
