Hlaing Tharyar in Yangon was the site of particularly large and well-organised protests against the military coup in Myanmar. In the run-up to 14 March, Myanmar Witness verified four anti-coup protests and the construction of road barricades in Hlaing Tharyar.
Myanmar Witness found no footage indicating that any of the protesters were armed or violent during this time. It was not possible to verify footage purporting to show violence by security forces or Security Administration Council (SAC) aligned individuals prior to 14 March, despite claims of this nature.
Despite this, after 14 March 2021, a violent crackdown on protesters began, with footage verified by Myanmar Witness revealing violence towards protesters.
